Many crane operators know that working in an urban environment brings its own set of challenges and hazards. One of those challenges is working the crane over an occupied building.
The key risk in any job is whether there is an element of serious harm of death to persons and if there is, then the Health and Safety at Work (General Risk and Workplace Management) Regulations 2016 need to be followed. Under the Regulations, a PCBU has a duty to identify hazards that could give rise to reasonably foreseeable risks to health and safety. If a PCBU cannot eliminate risks to health and safety in accordance with section 30(1)(a) of the HSWA, then Regulation 6, the Hierarchy of Control Measures, must apply. This means that one or more of the following actions that is most appropriate and effective taking into account the nature of the risk must be taken:
A crane operating over an occupied building that is a workplace must consider the above as well as abide by the HSWA Regulations. Titan Cranes are pleased to announce the addition of Alastair Dalzell to the team at their Christchurch branch. Alastair has taken on the role of Branch Manager, and will oversee the successful day-to-day running of the fleet. Alastair takes over from Barry Crone, who retired in March after being an important part of the Titan Cranes operations in Canterbury for over 36 years. Alastair brings with him extensive experience in the New Zealand crane industry. He was with Smith Crane and Construction for 20 years, starting out painting cranes before working his way to crane operator and then to supervisor. Alastair was involved in rescue and recovery following the February 2011 Earthquake in Christchurch, and in the subsequent demolition and rebuild of the city. Titan Cranes, established in Lower Hutt in 1965, has been a leader in the New Zealand crane industry for over 50 years. The Christchurch branch was established in 1979 and currently runs a fleet of 15 cranes, ranging from the 10-ton 1984 Hamilton, which is kept more as a collector’s item, up to the state-of-the-art 250-ton Terex AC250 All Terrain. The impact from the oil and gas and resource sector declines continue to constrain global demand for the international crane sector. Terex announced a 1st quarter loss of $74.2 Mil primarily due restructuring and merger and acquisition activities. “Our Cranes and Material Handling & Port Solutions (MHPS) segments had a challenging quarter, impacted by soft markets. Our Aerial Work Platforms (AWP), Materials Processing (MP) and Construction segments executed well and delivered results that were consistent with or better than last year, on an adjusted basis.” Read more here Zoomlion posted a net loss of $101.5mil for the 1st quarter.
